Lisbon’s multimodal tickets allow you to travel on the metro, buses, trams, ferries and trains around Lisbon area. They come in two flavours
- Viva Viagem, a anonymous traveling card, valid for one year and recommended for sporadic users;
- Lisboa Viva, a personalized traveling card recommended for frequent users;
Viva Viagem is the simples version of Lisbon’s multimodal ticket. It can be used
Price: The card itself costs 0,50€, is reusable and can be bought at the ticket machines in every metro and train stations as well as all Carris and other bus operator ticket shops.
Expiration: The card is valid for one year from the date of purchase.
Usage: Viva Viagem can be used in two ways
- Buy tickets for different operators. One combined Metropolitano de Lisboa and Carris network ticket costs 1,40€, train tickets start at 1,25€ and ferry tickets start at 1,20€. With this option however, you cannot have different tickets in the same card, i.e., you cannot transfer from bus to train with the same ticket for instance.
- Zapping. Zapping is the the other option to use with Viva Viagem cards which fully uses its multimodal capabilities. Using zapping you fill your card with up to 20€ and then just use it in any operator and any mode of transport. For each validation money is withdrawn from your card according to each operator fare for Zapping.
Zapping usage – details
One zone. Once you pass your card through the validator machine, the operator fare for one zone is withdrawn from your card and is valid for one hour. Within this time period no other withdrawn will be made although you must validate the ticket each time you change vehicle or mode of transportation.
Two zones. In this case, before validating your ticket you must press key “2” at the validator machine. The operator fare for two zones will be withdrawn from your card and is valid for two hours. Within this time period no other withdrawn will be made although you must validate (no need to press the key anymore) the ticket each time you change vehicle or mode of transportation.
If the metro service gets interrupted for more than 15 minutes, users have the right to claim a new ticket ou to be reimbursed for the cost of the ticket. The catch is that you must request this at the station where you validate your ticket for that trip and up to 45 min after the beginning of service interruption.
Lisboa Viva cards work in much the same way as Viva Viagem although more directed for monthly subscriptions. It supports up to four types of monthly subscriptions (from different operators). Simultaneously, the card supports the Zapping functionality making it easier to travel between an operator you use frequently to one you only only seldom use.
Where to buy:
Price: The card itself costs 7€ and must be bought at buses and metro ticket shops and requires you to bring along your ID card and a photo. To benefit from specific discounts (students, pensioners/retirees, etc.) certain additional documentation such as proof of school/university registration is necessary.
Expiration: The card is valid for 4 years or until you no longer satisfy the requirements for the specific discounts.
Usage: Once you get the card you need to fill it with the monthly subscriptions and/or Zapping and start using.
